Details
This is my Grandpa Harry. His parents were German immigrants who moved to Southampton, Ontario. Grandpa Harry grew up off Lake Huron, and he and his brothers were fisherman there. He eventually moved to Detroit and had a fishing business there off the Detroit River. He fought in WWII. He spoke German and snuck food and medicine to a needy German family while he fought with the Allies. Later, he married and had 8 children with my Grandma Sally. They were poor, but they were always helping others. I never knew him without his mind hijacked by Alzheimers. He died when I was seven.
He is part of me, and his story is part of the story of the Great Lakes.
This painting is from an old photo of him. It was 1923, and he was 17 years old.
